Past O'Reilly Scholars / C O Sullivan

Dr. Catherine O'Sullivan, from Cork,is a Senior Lecturer in Soil Mechanics at the Department of Civil Engineering, Imperial College London. Following completion of her undergraduate and masters degrees at UCC graduate, she travelled, as an O'Reilly Scholar, to the University of California, Berkeley for her doctoral studies. Her thesis title was "The Application of Discrete Element Modelling to Finite Deformation Problems in Geomechanics". Following graduation from Berkeley, Dr. O'Sullivan returned to Ireland for two years to work as a college lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering in University College Dublin. In 2003 Dr. O'Sullivan was awarded a basic research grant by IRCSET to continue her doctoral research.
In September 2004 Dr. O'Sullivan moved to Imperial College London. At Imperial College Dr. O'Sullivan has been a PI / CoI on 5 EPSRC funded research projects. Her research focusses on the particulate nature of soil and other granular materials, and she approaches this research using discrete element modelling and microcomputed tomography. Currently she is exploring wave propagation in soils, erosion of dam fill materials and permafrost. For the period 2008-2010 Dr. O'Sullivan was chair of the GB Region of Engineers Ireland, and a member of the Council of Engineers Ireland. She now sits on the committee of the British Geotechnical Society and is a member of the editorial panel of the journal Geotechnique. In 2009 she was awarded a teaching excellance award at Imperial College. Her text book "Particulate Discrete Element Modelling: A Geomechanics Perspective" will be published by Taylor and Francis.
